What is glamour photography?
Pictures of attractive looking women. Somewhere between the realms of pornography and fashion photoshoots lies the slightly controversial and often misinterpreted field of glamour photography. Contrary to popular opinion, it is not about crazy stylizations or celebrity photos. Glamour photos are presented, for example, by men’s magazines like Playboy. Their goal is to present the physical attractiveness of men and women and to arouse emotions related to it. In glamour photos, models often appear naked, in lingerie or in outfits that emphasize sexuality. Their poses and looks are defiant and provocative.
What is a glamour model?
Glamour models are women who possess a certain kind of sex appeal and who aren’t afraid to show off their bodies. Their poses tend to be more sexually suggestive than those of other models and are typically geared toward a male audience. There are so many ideas for glamour photo sessions.
What is the difference between glamour or boudoir session?
Glamour mode is about making images that more people will see. The audience for a boudoir shoot is also usually smaller – these images are usually enjoyed by just a few people including the client. Boudoir photography doesn’t just mean that you are in your underwear. It’s an approach to creating a suite of portraits that is more personal, more sensual, more evocative, more mysterious and more alluring than a typical portrait session.
How has the interest in glamour style photos changed?
It could be traced back to the early 1900s, when the French street vendors sold postcards with playful imagery of women. This is also the time when the pin-up culture rose to popularity, as seemingly surprised, sparingly dressed female figures would invite their viewers to play. Until the launch of Playboy magazine, actresses like Betty Grable and Bettie Page were a frequent sight inside trucks, body shops or among soldiers. During the 1950s, the magazines and even calendars featuring nude bodies were highly controversial and even illegal in some cases, which is why they were largely out of sight and censored. The enchanting imagery came back to the spotlight after a brief hiatus in the 1990s, with models like Hope Talmons, Heidi Van Horne, Katie Price and Dita Von Teese who redefined the concepts of the genre alongside capable photographers and respectable publications.
First glamour style shots
The very famous photograph of Ursula Andress emerging from the sea in Jamaica in Dr No, the very first James Bond movie filmed in 1962, could very well be the beginning of glamour photography. The image of a very beautiful and buxom blonde striding out of the sea with her wet hair dripping water over her shoulders and her clothes clinging very alluringly to her body (and thus showing all her beautiful curves) is the epitome of sensual and glamorous photography. So beautiful was she in this scene that it is said James Bond (who was played by Sean Connery) simply stood looking at her and totally forgot his lines.
First glamor mode photographers in the world
Possibly the two most famous early glamour photographers were Ruth Harriet Louise and George Hurrell, who worked in the United States during the 1920s. Ruth Harriet Louise was the first professional woman photographer active in Hollywood. Her portraits of stars like Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Marion Davies and John Gilbert are still among the most memorable ones, classic yet highly expressive and subtly sensual. Similarly, the photos of George Hurrell, who worked during the 1930s and 40s, glamorized the status of celebrities by utilizing lighting techniques to develop dramatic effects, often seeing subjects emerge from the dark background to reveal their famous faces.
